Holy Happy Hour!: O Bar & Kitchen

O_BardoorA few weeks ago someone called @obarandkitchen started following us on twitter. Naturally we went to their page and read a few of their past tweets and saw things like “$2 Sangria 4pm – 7pm” and “It’s almost 4pm, come in for happy hour $1 Sangria“. Obviously we grew curious. What is this constantly changing happy hour and is it worth checking out? After a few replies and a handful of direct messages back and forth we decided to get a few friends together and take the trip Downtown to try Orchid Hotel’s O Bar & Kitchen.

The Orchid Hotel is a small boutique hotel built out of a newly renovated 1920’s building. The hotel is tucked away on S Flower in the financial district of Downtown Los Angeles. It’s only a block and a half from the 7th st. Metro stop and there’s plenty of street parking and $5 garages nearby. Its modest steel and glass doorway leads to an equally modern yet much warmer feeling lobby with couches and a wide fireplace. Along the right wall of the lobby, a bench and tables stretch back to where the actual bar for O Bar & Kitchen sits. A short trip up a small wooden staircase brings you to the mezzanine furnished with low couches and tables to give guests more of a lounge feeling than the restaurant tables below. A perfect place to enjoy Happy Hour.

The Sangria is the real winner in this happy hour. It’s made with very fresh juices and fruit and that pitcher will get you about 6 drinks. Their tapas are small but what they lack in quantity they make up for in quality, so don’t come starving but bring a few friends so you can try a few different things. Personally I recommend the Grilled Halloumi Cheese and the Mexican Shrimp. The Halloumi is like a hard mozzarella with a meaty taste that stays with you and the Mexican shrimp is fresh and tender, served in a mouthwatering salsa with jalapenos for that little extra kick. If you do come starving, their food isn’t too expensive. I would pay the extra $2.50 to get the rib eye steak here instead of Chili’s.

O Bar & Kitchen currently has a DJ spinning every Thursday from 8pm – 2am, which is also the night that happy hour lasts until close, and starting this week they host free jazz on Tuesdays from 6pm – 9pm. The most important thing to remember if you want to go to O Bar & Kitchen is to follow them on Twitter! Every day they tweet about a different special from $1 glasses of Sangria to buy-one-get-one bottles of wine, but the only way to find out about the deal is through twitter.

We highly recommend O Bar & Kitchen’s Happy Hour for when you want to feel swanky without breaking the bank. As always, check out the Gallery to see more pictures of the food, the drinks, and the atmosphere!
